Difference Between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist

Difference Between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist

A registered dietitian is a nutrition expert that has met the minimum academic and professional requirements to qualify for the credential “RD.”

Those minimum requirements are:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with course work approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education. The coursework includes nutrition sciences, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy & physiology.
  • Complete an accredited, supervised internship.
  • Pass a national exam with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Complete continuing education requirements to maintain registration.

The “RD” credential is a legally protected title that can only be used by practitioners who are authorized by the Commission on Dietetic Registration and the American Dietetic Association. Some RDs call themselves nutritionists but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians. Virtually anyone can call themselves a “nutritionist” regardless of education or training.
